The Festival of São João de Sobrado, also known as the Bugiada and Mouriscada de Sobrado, is an annual celebration held on June 24 in honor of Saint John in the village of Sobrado (Valongo).
It is an ancient tradition that takes the form of a battle between Moors and Christians, known locally as Mourisqueiros and Bugios.
The Bugiada and Mouriscada is a theatrical reenactment of the legend. It takes place in the streets, and the participants (usually more than seven hundred) are residents or natives of Sobrado. Today, it is recognized as a rich anthropological and ethnographic phenomenon and one of the most important festivals in Portugal.
